Description

Dr. William W. Stead is widely recognized as a founding figure in the field of biomedical informatics, particularly in the areas of electronic health records (EHRs), clinical informatics, and learning health systems. His pioneering work has helped shape how healthcare institutions collect, organize, and apply health data to improve patient care and population health outcomes.

Dr. Stead currently serves as McKesson Foundation Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). At Vanderbilt, he led the creation of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, which has become one of the most prominent training and research programs in the world. His vision of a “learning health system” – where clinical practice and research feed into each other through data – has influenced both academic medicine and health policy globally.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Stead was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he spearheaded the development and deployment of one of the most advanced EHR systems in the country. This system integrated clinical workflows, data analytics, and decision support, setting a model for large health systems.

Beyond Vanderbilt, Dr. Stead has contributed significantly at the national level. He has served as a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and co-chaired influential reports on digital health infrastructure, precision medicine, and data interoperability. His thought leadership has consistently emphasized that data should be leveraged not just for documentation, but as a tool to continuously improve healthcare delivery and scientific discovery.

Throughout his career, Dr. Stead has authored numerous articles and policy papers, bridging the gap between clinical practice, informatics research, and health system leadership. His legacy continues to shape how health data systems are designed, implemented, and evaluated worldwide
