Description

  • Prof. Luca Bianchi is a renowned Italian physicist recognized for his pioneering research in quantum mechanics and its applications in advanced computing and secure communication systems. With over 25 years of experience in theoretical physics, Prof. Bianchi has played a vital role in bridging academic research with real-world quantum technologies.

Born in Florence, Italy, he obtained his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from ETH Zurich, where he developed new models of quantum entanglement that have since become foundational in modern quantum computing frameworks. His academic journey includes professorships at Sorbonne University in Paris and visiting fellowships at MIT and the Max Planck Institute.

Since 2018, Prof. Bianchi has served as the Director of Quantum Computing Research at CERN’s Institute for Advanced Simulation. Under his leadership, the institute has successfully launched several cross-border quantum initiatives, including QuantumSecure, a multinational research effort to develop post-quantum cryptography infrastructure for digital security systems.

He is a member of the European Quantum Technologies Flagship advisory board and leads a €95 million EU-funded project on quantum-classical hybrid simulation. His contributions to science have earned him multiple accolades, including the Galileo Medal for Fundamental Physics and the European Research Council’s Advanced Investigator Award.

Beyond his technical work, Prof. Bianchi is also a passionate educator and advocate for open science. He has authored over 120 peer-reviewed papers and three textbooks, and his lectures are freely available online as part of CERN’s Open Knowledge Initiative.
