Professor Hiroshi Tanaka is a globally renowned academic and policy advisor in the field of Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Technology Governance. With over 30 years of experience spanning academia, public sector consultancy, and international diplomacy, Prof. Tanaka has become a central figure in shaping responsible innovation standards across the world.

After completing his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Tokyo in 1992, he began his career as a researcher focused on machine learning. Over time, his work evolved to examine the societal impact of intelligent technologies, leading him to found the Center for Ethical AI Research (CEAIR) in 2008, based at Kyoto University. Under his leadership, CEAIR became the premier research institute in Asia dedicated to the safe, fair, and inclusive development of AI systems.

Prof. Tanaka has served as an advisor to the United Nations, UNESCO, and the G7 Global Partnership on AI, helping draft guidelines for AI governance and ethical risk frameworks. His widely cited publications cover algorithmic fairness, transparency, and digital human rights. He played a key role in Japan’s national AI ethics framework introduced in 2021, and he is a regular keynote speaker at conferences such as AI for Good, the World Economic Forum, and NeurIPS.

With a deep commitment to education, Prof. Tanaka has mentored over 100 doctoral students and launched Asia’s first interdisciplinary Master’s program on AI ethics. His forward-thinking yet grounded perspective continues to influence the global discourse on AI and society.
