Prof. Alejandro Torres is an internationally recognized economist focused on climate policy and sustainable development. With over 25 years of experience advising governments, international organizations, and corporations, he is a leading voice in designing economic systems resilient to climate change.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Prof. Torres completed his M.A. in Economics at the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Economics from the London School of Economics. Early in his career, he served with the Inter-American Development Bank, where he was instrumental in implementing carbon pricing mechanisms across Latin America.
From 2010 to 2019, he held the role of Senior Climate Finance Advisor at the World Bank, leading initiatives that mobilized over $12 billion in green investment across Africa and Southeast Asia. He developed policy blueprints for sustainable industrial growth in emerging economies, earning accolades from UNEP and the G20 Green Growth Group.
Currently, he is a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and serves as a professor at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. He is also the founder of VerdeCrest Advisors, a boutique consultancy firm that advises sovereign wealth funds on green investment portfolios.
Prof. Torres is frequently featured in global forums, including the UN Climate Conference, the Davos World Economic Forum, and academic journals like Nature Sustainability. A champion for policy-backed climate action, his work continues to bridge the gap between science, finance, and global equity.
