  • Prof. Alejandro Rivera is a distinguished architect and urban planner known for his visionary work in designing resilient, smart, and sustainable cities. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Prof. Rivera has led projects in over 30 countries, focusing on integrating ecological infrastructure into urban design.

With over 25 years of experience, Rivera’s passion lies in transforming rapidly urbanizing regions into livable, equitable spaces. He advocates for cities that center on human well-being, incorporating green spaces, public transportation systems, and smart infrastructure technologies. His designs emphasize circular economy principles, renewable energy integration, and participatory city governance.

Prof. Rivera earned his doctorate in Urban Ecology from ETH Zurich and taught urban design at institutions including the University of Melbourne and MIT. He has been instrumental in reshaping major cityscapes from São Paulo to Nairobi and Jakarta.

He most recently served as the Chief Urban Strategist at the UN-Habitat, where he led the “Green Cities for the Global South” initiative, fostering collaboration between local governments and private sector innovators.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rivera is the founder of Planeta Verde Initiative, a non-profit focused on climate education in urban communities. He frequently speaks at global summits and was recently appointed as a sustainability ambassador for the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.
