Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado is an internationally recognized leader in biomedical informatics and health data governance. She currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Yale School of Medicine and Associate Dean for Biomedical Informatics. With a background in medicine, computer science, and business administration, she has built her career around creating secure, scalable, and ethical infrastructures for health data use.
Ohno-Machado’s research contributions span across predictive modeling, AI in healthcare, distributed learning networks, and privacy-preserving analytics. She is particularly well known for developing methods that allow institutions to collaborate on research without needing to share raw patient data—an approach critical for protecting privacy while still enabling powerful insights.
Prior to joining Yale, she served as the Founding Chair of Biomedical Informatics at UC San Diego Health and was instrumental in creating the University of California Research eXchange (UC-Rex), a data network that linked health records across UC’s medical centers. At Yale, she leads efforts to expand secure platforms for integrating clinical data, genomics, imaging, and patient-reported outcomes, accelerating both precision medicine and population health research.
