Description

Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado is a distinguished physician–scientist, biomedical informatician, and academic leader whose career has shaped the global landscape of health data systems, biomedical informatics, and clinical AI applications. She is currently the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego).

Her pioneering work has centered on developing computational models for clinical decision support, data sharing across institutions, and privacy-preserving health analytics. Early in her career, she focused on machine learning and predictive modeling in healthcare, introducing innovative algorithms to improve diagnosis and treatment. Today, her research continues to explore AI in clinical care, patient-centered data governance, and interoperability frameworks that allow secure, large-scale health data exchange.

Dr. Ohno-Machado has also been instrumental in building consortia and infrastructures for biomedical data sharing. She served as the founding chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at UC San Diego Health and played a key leadership role in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) All of Us Research Program, which seeks to build one of the largest, most diverse health databases in history.

As an educator and mentor, she has trained numerous future leaders in biomedical informatics and health data science, fostering interdisciplinary research between computer science, medicine, and engineering. She also advocates for diversity in data science and inclusive participation in clinical studies to ensure equitable health outcomes.

Her work has been recognized with multiple awards and election to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). She also actively contributes to policy discussions on AI ethics, clinical data privacy, and digital health innovation
