Early Life and Education
Janette Sadik-Khan was born in San Francisco, California, and developed an early interest in how cities function. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Occidental College and later received her Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law. Her educational background gave her a solid foundation in public policy, urban governance, and legal frameworks—critical elements for implementing large-scale infrastructure change.
Leadership in New York City Transportation
From 2007 to 2013, Janette served as the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In this role, she redefined the concept of urban mobility, emphasizing sustainability, safety, and accessibility.
Her tenure was marked by ambitious projects that reclaimed streets for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing dependence on automobiles while improving urban livability. These transformations helped set a global standard for integrating transportation policy with sustainable infrastructure development.
Signature Projects
Janette Sadik-Khan spearheaded several groundbreaking projects, including:
-
Times Square Pedestrianization – Converted one of the busiest intersections in the world into a pedestrian plaza, dramatically improving safety and air quality.
-
Citi Bike Program – Launched New York City’s first bike-sharing program, now one of the largest and most successful in the world.
-
Complete Streets Initiative – Redesigned streets to accommodate all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit, while reducing vehicle lanes to enhance safety and efficiency.
Advocacy for Sustainable Infrastructure
Beyond transportation projects, Sadik-Khan emphasized infrastructure that promotes resilience to climate change. She introduced green infrastructure elements, such as permeable pavements and expanded tree canopies, to reduce stormwater runoff and heat island effects.
Her approach recognized that transportation networks are integral to urban sustainability—not just in moving people, but also in shaping healthier, more resilient cities.
Global Influence Through Bloomberg Associates
After her tenure at NYC DOT, Janette joined Bloomberg Associates as a Principal, where she now advises cities around the world on how to create sustainable, people-first streets. Her influence has extended to cities such as Los Angeles, Bogotá, and Paris, where she helps implement policies that prioritize active transportation, public transit, and climate adaptation.
She also serves as the chair of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), further amplifying her impact on urban infrastructure policy worldwide.
Publications and Thought Leadership
Janette co-authored the influential book “Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution”, which documents her experiences in New York and offers practical guidance for cities seeking to reclaim streets for people. The book has become a blueprint for urban planners and policymakers committed to sustainable infrastructure.
Her frequent keynote addresses at global forums, such as the World Urban Forum and C40 Cities Climate Leadership events, continue to inspire innovation in urban mobility and design.
