Description

Robert A. Greenes, M.D., Ph.D., is a distinguished physician-scientist and a leading figure in biomedical informatics and clinical decision support systems. Throughout his career, Dr. Greenes has focused on the design, evaluation, and implementation of health data systems that improve clinical care, decision-making, and medical education.

Dr. Greenes collaborated extensively with Edward H. Shortliffe, working on the development of some of the earliest AI-based decision support systems in medicine, including projects such as ONCOCIN, which pioneered rule-based reasoning for oncology care. Their joint work laid the foundation for knowledge-based systems that later evolved into modern clinical decision support tools used worldwide.

He served as Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Arizona State University (ASU), where he advanced research in informatics standards, interoperability, and personalized medicine. Before ASU, he was a longtime faculty member at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he directed major programs in clinical informatics.

Dr. Greenes has authored and edited numerous influential publications, including textbooks and research papers on health informatics, medical knowledge representation, and decision support systems. His work emphasizes the importance of integrating informatics into healthcare delivery to improve outcomes, efficiency, and safety.

He is a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and has been recognized for his pioneering efforts in advancing the field. Beyond academia, Dr. Greenes has mentored generations of leaders in informatics, many of whom have gone on to shape health IT policy and innovation worldwide.
