Early Life and Education

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan is an internationally renowned Indian pediatrician, clinical scientist, and epidemiologist. Born in 1959 in Chennai, India, she is the daughter of M. S. Swaminathan, a world-famous agricultural scientist often called the “Father of the Green Revolution in India.” Inspired by her father’s dedication to science and public service, Soumya pursued medicine and developed a strong interest in pediatrics and infectious diseases.

She completed her MBBS at Armed Forces Medical College (Pune, India) and further pursued a Doctorate (MD) in Pediatrics. Later, she specialized in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV research during her fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, USA.

    • Dr. Swaminathan served as the Director General of ICMR from 2015 to 2017.
