Don E. Detmer, M.D., M.A.

Don E. Detmer, M.D., M.A., is an internationally recognized leader in health informatics, medical education, and health policy, whose career has spanned clinical practice, academic leadership, and national policy development. He has made substantial contributions to the advancement of electronic health records (EHRs), data standards, and healthcare quality improvement.

Dr. Detmer served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), where he helped shape the agenda for health IT adoption in the United States and globally. Under his leadership, AMIA expanded its influence in informatics research, workforce development, and clinical data governance.

Earlier in his career, he was Vice President for Health Sciences at the University of Virginia, where he led initiatives in medical education, research, and hospital system improvement. He has also held senior positions at the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine), where he worked on committees that produced landmark reports on healthcare quality, safety, and IT infrastructure.

Dr. Detmer has been a prominent advocate for nationwide health information infrastructure, stressing the importance of interoperability, data standards, and evidence-based medicine. His research and policy work have influenced how governments, hospitals, and academic centers approach the integration of informatics into healthcare delivery.

A prolific author and speaker, he has published extensively on health IT policy, biomedical informatics, patient safety, and clinical decision support. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Medicine).
