Description
Diane Orentlicher, J.D., is a leading authority on transitional justice, international human rights, and accountability for mass atrocities. She is a Professor of International Law at American University Washington College of Law, where she has educated generations of lawyers and practitioners in international criminal law and post-conflict justice.
Internationally, Orentlicher is best known for her service as the United Nations Independent Expert on Combating Impunity (2004–2005), during which she updated the landmark UN “Set of Principles for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights through Action to Combat Impunity.” These principles have become a global reference point for states, courts, and civil society in shaping transitional justice policies.
Her scholarship bridges theory and practice, addressing how societies can reckon with legacies of mass violence while building democratic institutions. She has written extensively on the role of international tribunals, domestic prosecutions, truth commissions, and reparations programs, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to transitional justice. Her writings have influenced policymakers, judges, and human rights advocates around the world.
Beyond the UN, Orentlicher has worked with organizations such as the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and advised governments in Asia, Africa, and the Balkans on strategies to address past atrocities. She has also contributed to debates on the International Criminal Court (ICC), particularly its relationship to domestic justice systems and its impact on peace processes.
In addition to her academic and UN roles, she has been an outspoken advocate for the rights of victims, gender justice, and strengthening the rule of law in fragile states. Her career reflects a deep commitment to ensuring that justice is not only pursued at the international level but is meaningful and accessible within post-conflict societies themselves.
