Description

Daniel R. Masys, M.D., is a highly respected physician-scientist whose career has been dedicated to advancing biomedical informatics, genomics, and clinical research infrastructure. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and his contributions span medical informatics, health IT policy, and the integration of genomics into clinical practice.

Dr. Masys is internationally recognized for his leadership in developing large-scale clinical research databases and biobanking informatics systems. At Vanderbilt, he played a pivotal role in building the DNA biobank linked to de-identified electronic health records, enabling groundbreaking studies in genome-phenome relationships. This resource, often referred to as BioVU, has become one of the most influential platforms for precision medicine research.

Earlier in his career, he served as Director of the Lasker Clinical Research Center at the NIH and later worked at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), where he advanced systems for biomedical knowledge access and research. His experience also includes developing informatics solutions for clinical trials, ensuring data interoperability, and shaping policies for research data governance.

Beyond his research, Dr. Masys has been an educator and mentor, training numerous leaders in biomedical informatics. He has authored influential publications on clinical research informatics, health data sharing, and genomics data integration, making him a key figure in the evolution of precision health systems.

He is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and has received multiple awards recognizing his lifelong contributions to informatics
