Description

Dr. Christopher G. Chute is one of the world’s foremost authorities on biomedical informatics, clinical data standards, and health information interoperability. Based in the United States, he has dedicated his career to building the foundations of modern health data systems, particularly through his work on clinical terminologies and knowledge representation for precision medicine.

Dr. Chute currently serves as the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Health Informatics at Johns Hopkins University, where he holds joint appointments across public health, medicine, and nursing. At Johns Hopkins, he leads initiatives that focus on health data science, data-driven healthcare, and biomedical knowledge representation.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Chute spent decades at the Mayo Clinic, where he founded and chaired the Division of Biomedical Informatics. During this period, he worked on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) standards and played a crucial role in developing SNOMED-CT (Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine – Clinical Terms), which remains the backbone of electronic health record (EHR) systems worldwide.

His expertise is especially critical in the age of precision medicine and big data in healthcare, where accurate and interoperable health data standards are essential for research and clinical practice. Dr. Chute’s research includes mapping biomedical concepts across terminologies, enabling semantic interoperability across health systems and datasets globally.

He has served in leadership roles with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO), and the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, influencing global policy and infrastructure in health data systems.

Dr. Chute is widely published, having authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers, and he is a highly sought-after speaker at international conferences on informatics, epidemiology, and health data science. His impact continues to be felt not only in academia but also in healthcare delivery, policy, and international collaborations
