Dr. Blackford Middleton is a globally recognized leader in biomedical informatics and health data systems, particularly in the areas of clinical decision support (CDS), electronic health records (EHRs), and digital transformation in healthcare. With a background in medicine, public health, and computer science, Dr. Middleton has dedicated his career to bridging the gap between healthcare delivery and information technology.

He is currently the Chief Informatics and Innovation Officer at Apervita, Inc., a company focused on enabling value-based care through cloud-based analytics and interoperable health data solutions. Before joining Apervita, Dr. Middleton held prominent leadership roles in academic medicine and health systems, including Chair of the Board at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Middleton served as the Chief Information Officer at Harvard Medical School-affiliated Partners HealthCare (now Mass General Brigham). During this period, he played a key role in implementing large-scale EHR systems and advocating for nationwide adoption of digital health records. His work has consistently focused on harnessing data-driven tools to improve clinical decision-making, patient safety, and quality of care.

He has published extensively on health IT policy, CDS implementation, and the economics of EHR adoption. Dr. Middleton was also deeply involved in shaping U.S. healthcare IT policy, contributing to initiatives under the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).

Through his leadership, he has become a prominent voice in discussions about interoperability, data standards, and the ethical use of health data. His vision emphasizes that effective health data systems should not only support clinicians but also empower patients and drive system-wide improvements in efficiency and outcomes
