Dr. Antoine Geissbuhler is a globally recognized physician, informatician, and digital health leader from Switzerland, best known for his pioneering work in telemedicine, health data systems, and global eHealth initiatives. With a strong background in internal medicine and medical informatics, he has dedicated his career to improving access to healthcare through digital transformation, interoperability, and innovative telehealth solutions.
Dr. Geissbuhler has served as Professor of Medical Informatics at the University of Geneva and as the Director of the Division of eHealth and Telemedicine at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG). Under his leadership, HUG developed advanced systems in clinical decision support, electronic health records, and telemedicine platforms, making the institution one of Europe’s leaders in digital health innovation.
Internationally, Dr. Geissbuhler is a central figure in the World Health Organization’s eHealth strategy. He has been deeply involved in projects that expand healthcare access in low-resource settings, particularly in Africa. He played a key role in establishing the RAFT (Réseau en Afrique Francophone pour la Télémédecine) network, which connects hospitals and universities across Francophone Africa to deliver tele-education and telemedicine services. This initiative has significantly improved the training of healthcare professionals and patient care in underserved regions.
He also served as President of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) from 2010 to 2013, where he advanced the global health informatics agenda, promoting collaboration between nations to standardize health data systems.
His contributions are not limited to systems development—Dr. Geissbuhler has authored influential research on medical knowledge management, interoperability, and the use of AI in healthcare. He continues to advocate for digital equity in health, bridging the gap between advanced health systems and developing countries.
