Description

Alexa T. McCray, Ph.D., is a distinguished scholar and educator in the field of biomedical informatics, with decades of experience advancing the ways in which health information is organized, represented, and accessed. She currently serves as a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Department of Biomedical Informatics.

Her research centers on the development of medical terminologies, ontologies, and semantic structures that enable more effective knowledge representation in clinical and biomedical sciences. She has been instrumental in designing systems that allow both clinicians and researchers to access, integrate, and apply vast amounts of health data in meaningful ways.

Earlier in her career, Dr. McCray led projects at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), where she played a key role in advancing Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) development. Her contributions significantly improved how complex biomedical concepts are standardized and made interoperable across diverse health information systems.

At Harvard, she has built strong programs in biomedical informatics education and research, mentoring the next generation of leaders in the field. She is also recognized for her commitment to bridging gaps between computational methods, clinical practice, and public health needs.

Dr. McCray’s work has shaped the foundations of semantic interoperability in health data systems, directly influencing how electronic health records (EHRs), decision support systems, and biomedical databases communicate and function in the modern healthcare ecosystem.

She is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a testament to her impact on the field.
