Description
John Halamka is one of the most widely recognized leaders in health data systems, with a career spanning decades at the intersection of clinical practice, informatics, and large-scale interoperability. As the Dwight & Dian Diercks President of the Mayo Clinic Platform, he leads global digital businesses that bring together de-identified multi-institutional datasets, secure cloud infrastructure, and algorithm validation pipelines to accelerate AI in healthcare while safeguarding privacy. Before joining Mayo Clinic, Halamka served more than 20 years as CIO at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and held faculty roles at Harvard Medical School, advising U.S. administrations and international governments on health IT strategy and standards. His work emphasizes responsibly sharing health data across ecosystems to improve safety, quality, and access, and he has authored numerous books and hundreds of articles translating complex technology into practical clinical value. Today, Halamka’s priorities include building trustworthy model-evaluation frameworks (e.g., via the Coalition for Health AI), advancing algorithmic fairness, and creating platform tools that convert raw health data into real-world evidence. Colleagues often point to his ability to convene stakeholders—providers, payers, regulators, and tech companies—and turn standards (like FHIR), governance, and engineering into deployable solutions that clinicians actually use. Based in Rochester, Minnesota, he remains a practicing emergency physician, grounding his platform work in frontline realities
