Description

Early Life and Education

Enric Batlle, born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1956, is an internationally recognized architect and landscape designer known for merging urban form with ecological processes. From a young age, he was fascinated by the intersection of natural landscapes and human settlements—an interest shaped by the Mediterranean’s diverse terrains and Barcelona’s rich architectural heritage.

He graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) in 1980 and later earned a PhD in architecture, focusing his research on the integration of urban infrastructure and green systems. This academic foundation would later influence his distinctive design approach, which balances technical precision with ecological awareness.

Professional Journey

In 1981, together with Joan Roig, he co-founded Batlle i Roig Arquitectura, a multidisciplinary studio specializing in architecture, landscape, and urban design. The firm has worked extensively on projects that transform degraded areas—such as old industrial sites, landfills, and neglected riverbanks—into functional, sustainable spaces that benefit both people and ecosystems.

Batlle’s philosophy emphasizes infrastructure as a landscape element rather than a purely utilitarian structure. He promotes green corridors, urban forests, and restored river systems as integral components of a modern city’s resilience strategy.

Key Concepts and Design Philosophy

  1. Ecological Integration – Designing infrastructure that blends into natural systems and restores biodiversity.

  2. Recycling of Land – Converting abandoned or damaged land into valuable ecological and recreational assets.

  3. Multifunctional Green Spaces – Creating areas that combine environmental protection with community engagement.

Major Works and Achievements

  • Garraf Landfill Restoration (Barcelona) – Transformed a massive landfill into a public park with native vegetation, hiking trails, and ecological education facilities.

  • Llobregat River Park – Revitalized a neglected river corridor into a greenbelt that improves flood control, wildlife habitat, and public access.

  • Las Llamas Park (Santander) – A large-scale urban park designed to integrate stormwater management with public recreation.

  • Infrastructure Green Roofs in Barcelona – Pioneering use of vegetated roofs on large-scale transport and industrial facilities.

Awards and Recognition

  • European Landscape Award for Garraf Landfill Restoration.

  • FAD Architecture Award for public space design.

  • International Biennial of Landscape Architecture special mention for innovative ecological projects.

Approach to Sustainable Infrastructure

Batlle champions the idea that sustainable infrastructure is not just about efficiency, but also about creating social and ecological value. His designs often incorporate:

  • Permeable surfaces for stormwater infiltration.

  • Native plantings to restore local ecosystems.

  • Pedestrian and cycling networks that promote sustainable mobility.

His work is rooted in the belief that infrastructure should heal the environment rather than degrade it.

Global Influence

While based in Catalonia, Batlle’s expertise has been sought internationally for projects in Latin America, Asia, and Europe. He has been a guest lecturer at universities worldwide, promoting a vision of urbanism that intertwines ecological health and human well-being.

Vision for the Future

Enric Batlle envisions cities as ecological networks, where infrastructure doubles as habitat, recreation space, and climate adaptation strategy. He advocates for long-term urban plans that prioritize soil restoration, water management, and biodiversity corridors.

Through his leadership at Batlle i Roig Arquitectura, he continues to demonstrate that sustainable infrastructure can transform post-industrial landscapes into thriving green systems.
