Prof. Alessandra Moretti is a globally respected voice in the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), digital rights, and technology governance. Based in Milan, Italy, she has spent over 20 years at the forefront of research and policy development, ensuring that emerging technologies are aligned with human rights, equity, and democratic values.
Prof. Moretti holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Technology from the University of Bologna. Her academic work explores the ethical dimensions of machine learning, algorithmic bias, and the social impact of surveillance systems. She is the author of multiple publications, including the widely cited book “Ethics by Design: Rethinking Responsibility in the Age of AI”.
From 2016 to 2023, she served as Senior Advisor for Ethical AI Policy at the European Commission. During her tenure, she was instrumental in shaping the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act and co-led the High-Level Expert Group on AI, which developed ethical guidelines for trustworthy AI adopted by governments, tech companies, and civil society organizations across Europe and beyond.
In 2024, she returned to academia as a professor at Politecnico di Milano, where she leads the Human-Centered AI Lab—an interdisciplinary think tank focused on designing inclusive, accountable, and transparent digital ecosystems. Her work bridges philosophy, law, and computer science, pushing for stronger safeguards in data governance, labor automation, and platform accountability.
She is an active board member of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) and UNESCO’s AI & Ethics committee. Prof. Moretti is also a frequent speaker at TEDx, the World Economic Forum, and the Internet Governance Forum.
She resides in Milan and is fluent in Italian, English, and French. Prof. Moretti remains a passionate mentor for young women in STEM and an outspoken advocate for placing human dignity at the center of technological progress.
