Description
Dr. Peter Szolovits is a globally recognized computer scientist and pioneer in biomedical informatics whose contributions span artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine, natural language processing (NLP), and health data systems. For over four decades, his work has been central to developing computational methods that allow machines to understand, analyze, and apply medical knowledge to support clinicians and researchers.
He currently serves as Professor of Computer Science and Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also a core faculty member of the MIT Institute for Medical Engineering and Science (IMES) and the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
Dr. Szolovits’ early research focused on applying expert systems to medical decision-making, laying the foundation for clinical decision support systems that are now widely integrated into modern electronic health records (EHRs). His later work expanded into natural language processing, developing algorithms that extract and interpret unstructured clinical notes and biomedical literature. These technologies have been instrumental in transforming how health systems leverage data for patient care, research, and population health.
A passionate educator, Dr. Szolovits has trained generations of leaders in biomedical informatics and computer science. He has also played an active role in advancing interdisciplinary research, bringing together computer science, medicine, and bioengineering to solve some of healthcare’s most pressing challenges.
Beyond academia, he has advised government agencies and private companies on issues of health IT, data interoperability, and AI in medicine, shaping both national and international policies.
His contributions have been widely recognized, including leadership roles in professional societies and authorship of influential papers that continue to guide the development of learning health systems and computational health informatics
